Where Do We Fly? Our flying site is just a couple of miles from the Alabama State Line. As you can see from the map below, it is extremely easy to find. We have the privilege of being guests of the U.S. Navy who allow us to use this one mile square mowed grass helicopter field.
Who Is Eligible To Use The Field? The Navy issues licenses to those who are either PFFT voting members or those who have flying privilege memberships. In either case, anyone flying on the field must also have a current AMA membership card. The Navy issued license document must be presented whenever asked by Navy security personnel. You will be considered as trespassing without this license document. Those with flying privileges may obtain the lock combination to the gate from any one of the officers of the club.
When Do We Fly? We fly almost every Saturday morning when the wind is reasonably calm and the weather is otherwise reasonable. We are a pretty relaxed bunch, but some of us are almost always on the field by 0900. We actually have permission to use the field at any time when the Navy isn't using it - which means that except in unusual circumstances we normally have access on weekends and federal holidays. During summer months when days are long, the Navy normally closes their activities at about 1700 hours. We have permission to use the field during the week after the Crash Crew departs for the day.
The Navy Is Very Strict About Three Things 1. The field must never be used when the Crash Crew is on board. 2. You must have a copy of the license signed by a Navy official in your possession when on the field, and also a copy of your current AMA membership card. 3. If a helicopter approaches the field you must immediately stop flying until it is determined whether the helicopter intends to land. If so, you must cease flying activity and depart the field. Violation of these rules will subject you to eviction and/or arrest - and worse yet, endanger everyone's continued access to this fabulous flying site.
